Senior Editors

Full time, half time

Senior Editors at The California Sunday Magazine will be responsible for finding new writers, gathering and generating story ideas, and editing reported features and shorts. Candidates should have considerable experience writing or editing reported, story-driven features for a national audience. We're interested in vivid characters, surprising plots, hidden worlds, and writerly quests, set in California, the West, Asia, and Latin America.

You should be good at helping writers develop big, complicated, deeply reported features. Or tell a memorable story—funny, or sad, or startling, or beautiful—in just a few hundred words. You should be the kind of editor that writers seek out.

It’s great if you bring expertise in a particular topic, like science and technology, social issues, entertainment, business, or politics. You’ll put that knowledge to good use. But editors won’t be assigned to narrow beats or verticals. We’re looking for horizontal types. If, in addition, you’re thoughtful about photography, sound, film, code, live performance, or storytelling experiments, let us know.

You should have lots of ideas, and believe this is a great time to be making media.

Senior editors will be based in the San Francisco Bay Area or Los Angeles. We'll consider candidates from anywhere, but if you don’t live in California right now, you should be prepared to show a deep familiarity with West Coast writers and culture.

To apply, send a resume and cover letter to jobs@californiasunday.com with Senior Editor in the subject line. Specify whether you are applying for full-time position or a half-time position.

We're hiring both full-time and half-time Senior Editors. Salary will depend on experience. All Senior Editors will receive equity in California Sunday, Inc., publisher of The California Sunday Magazine and Pop-Up Magazine. Full-time positions include health insurance.
