Full time – Los Angeles
The Associate Editor at The California Sunday Magazine will be responsible for finding new writers, gathering and generating story ideas, editing, writing sometimes, and contributing to a variety of projects. We're interested in vivid characters, surprising plots, hidden worlds, and writerly quests, set in California, the West, Asia, and Latin America.
Candidates should have experience writing or editing stories for a good sized audience, but this does not have to mean formal magazine experience. We are also interested in candidates who have written a stylish blog or contributed to a smart indie web outlet.
We're especially interested in candidates who know culture, arts, entertainment, or technology. But editors won’t be assigned to narrow beats or verticals. We’re looking for horizontal types. If, in addition, you're thoughtful about photography, sound, film, code, live performance, or storytelling experiments, let us know.
You should have lots of ideas, and believe this is a great time to be making media.
This position is full time, based in Los Angeles. Candidates should already be living and working on the West Coast.
To apply, send a resume and cover letter to [email protected] with Associate Editor in the subject line.
Salary will depend on experience. The Associate Editor will receive equity in California Sunday, publisher of The California Sunday Magazine and Pop-Up Magazine, and health insurance.
We'd love to hear your story ideas. We're not hiring staff writers or contributing writers yet. But we look forward to working with a wide network of independent, freelance writers. Our rates for reported features will be competitive with national print magazines. And you'll work with exceptional editors. Send a note to [email protected] to receive our Contributor Guide, as well as very occasional emails that will let you know if we're developing a special issue or looking for stories on a particular theme.
Photographers and Illustrators
Photographers and illustrators are welcome to share their work for consideration. We are open to seeing a variety of work as we assemble a roster of talented contributors and hope to be a meaningful outlet for artists for a long time.
